Tripwire Interactive has announced Maneater 2, a sequel to its open-world shark action RPG, during the latest PlayStation State of Play. The game is currently in development for PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store, with a 2027 release planned.
Maneater 2 is being developed in collaboration with Boston-based Demiurge Studios. The sequel will once again put players in control of a shark, with the new game taking place in Neptune’s Kingdom, a luxury theme park and resort inspired by the grandeur of the Roman Empire.
Players will be able to explore Neptune’s Kingdom as an aquatic sandbox filled with underwater environments, attractions, hidden areas and a variety of marine life. The setting is also home to advanced marine research that has pushed genetic experimentation and conservation technology into ethically questionable territory.
The sequel will retain the core gameplay loop of eating, exploring and evolving, while adding a new escape-focused element to the experience. Players will be able to hunt marine life including pufferfish, jumbo crab, piranha and grouper, while humans will also become part of the shark’s food chain.
Neptune’s Kingdom is hosting an exclusive preview event for influencers and media figures when the shark arrives, providing the setting for the sequel’s story. Beneath the resort’s luxurious appearance, players will uncover the consequences of its research programme and attempt to escape the facility.
Trip Westhaven will also return as the game’s narrator. The disgraced reality television host, voiced again by Chris Parnell, will accompany the shark with his commentary throughout the adventure.
Tripwire and Demiurge are also targeting greater visual and environmental detail for the sequel. Underwater areas will feature more realistic lighting, while marine ecosystems will include more advanced behaviour for both predators and prey.
Maneater 2 will also feature genetic modifications that can alter the shark. The game’s Neptune’s Kingdom setting already has 5 different genetic modifications connected to its research programme, although Tripwire has not yet detailed exactly how these systems will work for players.
The original Maneater and its Truth Quest expansion have accumulated more than 20 million players worldwide since the franchise debuted in 2020.
