Marathon Delays Major Symbiosis Update To December 8

by Greg Martin

Bungie has delayed Marathon’s next major update, moving the planned September 22 release to December 8 as part of a larger Symbiosis update. The developer says the additional time will allow the team to address player feedback around progression, variety and long term engagement before introducing the game’s next major features.

The content originally planned for September will now arrive with Symbiosis, which Bungie describes as the first major step in Marathon’s next chapter. The December update will introduce a permanent PvE experience, a refreshed Perimeter zone and a new Runner shell, alongside several additional features.

Marathon Symbiosis Update includes:

  • Permanent PvE experience
  • Refreshed Perimeter experience
  • New Runner shell
  • Social space with firing range
  • Experimental Team Deathmatch mode
  • New player onboarding improvements

Before Symbiosis arrives, Bungie will release a smaller Nightfall Refresh update on October 6. This update will reset player progression and the in game economy, refresh rewards and introduce quality of life and balance changes.

The reset is intended to address problems that emerged with Marathon Season 2: Nightfall. Bungie says progression and reward issues allowed some players to reach the endgame faster than intended while others were left behind, making the Extraction experience more difficult to engage with.

The October update will also introduce a new Rewards Pass. Vault Breaker will return for a limited time, allowing Bungie to gather additional information about how PvE activities interact with progression following a reset. The resulting feedback will be used to help determine the future direction of PvE in Marathon.

Bungie says it will use the eight weeks between the October and December updates for additional gameplay experiments and will share what the team learns during that period. Player feedback will also continue to influence development as the studio works toward Symbiosis and subsequent updates planned for March and beyond.

The developer is also changing how it approaches Marathon’s update schedule. Rather than following a strict seasonal model with major releases tied to fixed deadlines, Bungie plans to give the development team more flexibility to build, test and refine features before releasing them.

Symbiosis is intended to expand Marathon beyond its existing PvPvE extraction structure by providing a permanent PvE option and additional ways for players to interact with the game. Bungie says the update will serve as a foundation for the game’s broader evolution through March and beyond.

The studio plans to provide further details in upcoming Dev Insights videos and development updates, with another blog scheduled for later this month to outline its plans for making Marathon a more alien and dynamic survival experience.
