Sony Interactive Entertainment and Arc System Works’ fighting game, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, has received a major change in gameplay that has fans divided.

According to fighting game community (FGC) member ChromeAlchemist, who is attending EVO France 2026, the latest build brings cooldowns for assists and character tags. The new version is available for attendees to try alongside the game’s upcoming DLC character, Cyclops. Fans appear to be divided on the introduction of this major gameplay change in Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls.

Marvel tokon gameplay change

As reported by ChromeAlchemist, assists now have a 3 second cooldown, while tagging incurs a 5 second cooldown. Additionally, players must wait 5 seconds to use an assist again if it gets hit. The changes will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the pace of the 4v4 tag fighter, where chaining assists and switching characters are a central mechanic.

ChromeAlchemist expressed his frustration with the adjustments, saying the game is “ruined” and suggesting that players who had called for more neutral gameplay had finally gotten their wish. However, the community remains divided.

Several players welcomed the changes, arguing that the existing version of Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls relies too heavily on repeatedly calling assists to secure hits, leaving little room for strategic decision-making. Others believe the cooldowns will reward players who manage their assists carefully, rotate their characters effectively, and develop stronger solo combos.

On the other hand, some fans worry that limiting offensive options without strengthening defensive mechanics may slow matches considerably. Damascus, another FGC member attending EVO France 2026, expressed support for the concept but believes that additional balancing might be necessary to prevent lengthy tournament matches.

Some players who had lost interest in the game said the adjustments made them want to return. Others questioned whether the cooldowns would meaningfully restrict assist usage, noting that many combos already last longer than the reported cooldown periods.

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is available for PlayStation 5 and Windows PC.
