AMD may be bringing its AI upscaling technology, FSR 4.1, to Xbox Series X|S consoles sometime in the near future.

WIndows Central’s Jez Corden (via IdleSloth84_) took to Twitter/X to respond to a follower, who asked about the possibility of AMD FSR 4.1 upscaling technology arriving on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. In his brief reply, he told them to “stay tuned on this,” ending his post with a smiley.

Corden’s post suggests that Microsoft and AMD may already be working to bring AMD FSR 4.1 to Xbox Series X and Xbox Series X. It is in line with AMD’s recent announcement regarding its plans to expand FSR 4 to more devices by the end of 2026. Technically, both consoles are capable of supporting the AI upscaling technology in some shape or form, with the Xbox Series X being capable of delivering close to 50 and the Xbox Series S being able to push 16 Tera Operations Per Second (TOPs).

For reference, the PS5 Pro is capable of delivering 300 TOPs. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s mid-gen console includes a dedicated neural networking hardware block designed specifically for high-throughput machine learning, giving it roughly 6 times the INT8 processing capability of the Xbox Series X.

Meanwhile, the base PS5 doesn’t support INT8 math, and therefore relies on FP16 (16-bit floating-point) to run its recently announced AI upscaling technology, Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR). Sony designed the upscaler to bring some of the image-quality benefits of  the PS5 Pro’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) to the base console. Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first games to support QSSR, with both receiving patches that add it as an additional graphics option.

Insomniac Games said QSSR improves pixel-level clarity and stability in Marvel’s Wolverine, helping reveal additional detail across the game’s environments. Sucker Punch Productions similarly said QSSR improves fine detail in characters and environments in Ghost of Yōtei, while providing a level of temporal stability that was previously unavailable on PS5.
