Monster Hunter Wilds runs at a largely stable 30 FPS on Nintendo Switch 2, according to a technical analysis of the game’s recent demo by Digital Foundry. Comparing the port with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S versions, the analysis found that Capcom has delivered competitive visuals despite the lower internal resolution.
According to Digital Foundry’s Oliver Mackenzie, the Switch 2 version maintains a consistent 30 FPS in quality mode, with only minor drops during certain cutscene transitions. Frame pacing was also largely stable during testing.
Players can switch to a frame rate mode that runs at approximately 40 to 55 FPS. This mode reduces resolution slightly and removes screen space reflections to improve performance. Digital Foundry also tested 120Hz output, although variable refresh rate support did not appear to work as expected.
Digital Foundry estimated that the Switch 2 quality mode runs at an internal resolution of approximately 648p, compared with a resolution approaching 1080p on Xbox Series S. NVIDIA DLSS image reconstruction helps compensate for the difference, producing a cleaner image in some scenes.
The analysis also found that the Switch 2 version sometimes uses higher-resolution textures than the Xbox Series S release. Examples included books, clothing, and environmental surfaces. Capcom’s Nintendo port also features screen space reflections that are missing from the Series S version.
However, the Switch 2 version makes several visual compromises. Shadows have lower resolution, some areas feature less detailed geometry, and distant foliage and non-player characters have limited animation.
In handheld mode, Monster Hunter Wilds runs at an estimated internal resolution of 432p, resulting in a softer image than the docked version. Despite the reduced resolution and visual settings, performance remained close to 30 FPS with the frame rate locked during Digital Foundry’s testing.
The PS5 version generally offers more detailed geometry and higher-resolution textures. However, Digital Foundry also observed noticeable aliasing associated with the console version’s FSR 1 upscaling implementation.
Monster Hunter Wilds originally launched on February 28, 2025, for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Its Nintendo Switch 2 version is scheduled to release on December 4, 2026, with online cross-play and local wireless co-op support.
