A recent Nintendo Switch 2 ban wave issued due to an “internal server error” is now reportedly being reversed.
Over the past few days, an unusually large number of Nintendo Switch 2 owners on Reddit have reported receiving error codes associated with a console ban wave, despite claiming they had not engaged in piracy or other activity that would normally result in a hardware ban. The reports have led to plenty of debate, with some users questioning whether the bans could have been triggered by Switch 1 game cards that had previously been copied or otherwise improperly flagged by Nintendo.
One affected Reddit member, RabidTowel, reported receiving error code 2181-4008 when attempting to access the eShop. They said they only purchased games from primary UK retailers or the eShop and did not even play online multiplayer. After initially wondering whether connecting to hotel Wi-Fi in France might have triggered the ban, the user later reported that the ban had been lifted after restarting the console.
Another user, ThirteenBanger, described what they called a “massive BAN wave” that affected multiple Switch 2 consoles over the Labor Day weekend. They initially contacted Nintendo Support and were told that their console had been permanently banned for “pirating.” However, after calling again later, a representative informed them that there had been an internal server error. Their console was subsequently unbanned.
The reports suggest that several of the console bans were eventually reversed, with users saying that simply restarting their Nintendo Switch 2 cleared the error. Nintendo doesn’t have a history of handing out accidental console-wide bans, nor is is known for reversing hardware bans, so this would be considered a rather unusual mishap from the console maker. Back in July, 2025, reports suggesting that the Nintendo Switch 2 could be banned after playing a used physical game were called into question, as evidence pointed toward a more likely explanation involving unauthorized hardware modifications.
