PlayStation Ending Physical Game Discs in 2028

by Greg Martin

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that it will end physical disc production for all new PlayStation game releases beginning in January 2028, marking a major shift towards a fully digital future.

From that point onwards, newly released games for PlayStation consoles will only be available in digital formats through the PlayStation Store and participating retailers. Sony confirmed that the change applies only to games launching from January 2028 onward and will not affect titles released before that date in physical format.

According to the company, the decision reflects changing consumer habits and the wider entertainment industry’s continued move away from physical media.

Sony said digital game purchases now significantly outpace physical disc sales, making the transition a natural step as it adapts to how the majority of players choose to buy and access games.

Although physical discs for new releases will no longer be produced after January 2028, Sony emphasised that players will still have options regarding where they purchase digital games. New releases will continue to be available both through the PlayStation Store and at retailers offering digital versions.

The company added that shifting away from physical media will allow it to focus more of its resources on improving how players access games and continue investing in new digital experiences.

The move represents one of the biggest changes to PlayStation’s software distribution strategy since the introduction of digital game downloads, signalling the end of physical discs for future PlayStation releases after January 2028.
