Resident Evil 4 Remake Rated by ESRB, Here Are The Details On Its Violence and Gore

Resident Evil 4 Remake is out in early 2023. ESRB has given the game a Mature rating citing violence, blood, and gore, among other reasons for this rating.

Fans of the original Resident Evil 4 might be familiar with the gore in the game. There were plenty of moments where Leon had to die in horrific ways including getting his head slashed with a chainsaw. The upcoming Remake which is more of an overhaul with new content is likely going to continue this trend and might look even more disgusting thanks to the photorealistic visuals.

Here’s what the ESRB had to share regarding the upcoming Resident Evil 4 Remake.

This is a survival-horror game in which players assume the role of a government agent (Leon Kennedy) sent to rescue a character from a religious cult. From a third-person perspective, players explore a rural environment while searching for clues and fighting zombies and mutated creatures. Players use pistols, machine guns, shotguns, and explosives to kill enemy creatures in frenetic combat. Some weapons/attacks result in decapitation and/or dismemberment of enemies, along with large splatters of blood. Enemy attacks (e.g., chainsaws, tentacles) can also result in Leon being decapitated, blown apart, or impaled. Eviscerated animals and mutilated corpses are depicted in some environments. The words “f**k” and “sh*t” appear in the game.

It is pertinent to mention that ESRB has also listed in-game purchases for the Resident Evil 4 Remake, however, this shouldn’t be confused with microtransactions or downloadable content. This is a pretty standard rating for a game that might offer updates or in-game content like links to other games in the series.

Capcom has also included links to other games in the previous Resident Evil releases and they had similarly received an ESRB rating with this description. They also offer free downloadable content in the form of updates to the game, so that description could have pointed towards RE4 Remake getting the same treatment.

RE4 Remake is currently slated to launch on March 24, 2023, for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series, and PC. It is apparently not coming to the Xbox One despite there being a rumor about it. The game is being developed by Capcom. It was originally rumored to have been in development at M-Two, who have worked on the Resident Evil 3 Remake, but after some issues, the development switched back to Capcom.
