The Resident Evil franchise has reportedly overtaken Final Fantasy to become the third best-selling Japanese video game series of all time, according to figures shared by Genki JPN.
Based on the latest franchise sales totals, Resident Evil has reached 213 million copies sold worldwide, narrowly edging past Final Fantasy, which stands at 212 million copies.
If the figures are accurate, only Mario and Pokémon have sold more copies among Japanese-developed video game franchises.
Resident Evil has enjoyed a remarkable resurgence in recent years thanks to a string of critically acclaimed releases. Capcom has expanded the series with remakes of Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 4, alongside new entries including Resident Evil Village and the recently released Resident Evil Requiem.
Capcom also confirmed in its latest financial results that Resident Evil Requiem has now sold more than 8 million units worldwide, while older entries in the series continue to benefit from promotional pricing and strong catalogue sales.
Meanwhile, Square Enix has continued to grow the Final Fantasy brand through releases such as Final Fantasy XVI, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and ongoing expansions for Final Fantasy XIV. The long-running RPG franchise remains one of Japan’s most successful gaming properties and has consistently evolved its gameplay and storytelling across nearly four decades.
While the latest figures place Resident Evil ahead by around 1 million copies, both franchises remain among the most commercially successful video game series ever created, with more than 200 million lifetime sales each.
