Sony is apparently eyeing Take-Two Interactive, the publisher of games like Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, NBA 2K, and Borderlands.
This rumor comes from a financial website Market Watch which just dropped it in the middle of a stock report. According to the website, the stock price of Take-Two Interactive jumped up 4.7% due to the rumors in the industry that Sony is looking at acquiring them.
It will be a mostly cash-based deal as per Market Watch. Sony “is in advanced board level discussions to acquire Take-Two Interactive in a mostly cash deal.” It will make it the first time this generation when Sony Corporation has acquired a major game studio. They already have a great lineup for first-party studios under the Sony Worldwide Studios umbrella.
Take-Two Interactive is mostly known for their subsidiary Rockstar Interactive Entertainment, who has sold some of the best selling games in the world with their Grand Theft Auto series. They also own Gearbox, who have developed the Borderlands series. NBA 2K is one of the most selling sports franchise in the same league as EA Sports FIFA series.
This is just a rumor for now, so this has to be taken with a massive grain of sale. It is still interesting to report here, even if this looks more unlikely to happen in the foreseeable future.
