Industry insider Nate the Hate claims Starfield, Doom The Dark Ages and Red Dead Redemption 2 have all been planned for Nintendo Switch 2. However, he says recent developments at Bethesda have made the status of the first two ports uncertain, while Rockstar’s plans for Red Dead Redemption 2 could depend on its focus on Grand Theft Auto 6.
Nate discussed the potential ports while talking about possible announcements for an upcoming Nintendo Direct. He said he had previously heard that Starfield was in development for Switch 2, although the project has reportedly faced serious development problems.
“It is an interesting prediction and it’s something last year I had heard was in development for Switch 2,” Nate said. He then added that “throughout this year, I’ve heard that development has been very rough and they were considering cancelling the port.”
Nate questioned whether Bethesda is still willing to provide the resources needed to bring the large-scale RPG to Nintendo’s hardware, asking, “Is Starfield really the game that’s still getting the budget and resources to be ported over to Switch 2?”
As a result, he is no longer confident that the reported Starfield Switch 2 port remains in development.
Doom The Dark Ages Plans May Have Changed
Nate also said Doom The Dark Ages had originally been intended for Nintendo Switch 2. “I would go as far to extend this to Doom Dark Ages that is a game that they did have intention to bring over to Switch 2,” he said.
The situation has reportedly become less clear following changes at id Software. Nate said that if the port is still being developed, it would now need to be handled outside the studio.
“But then ID Software was essentially shuttered, they were gutted, so if there is a port of Doom Dark Ages in development it has to be outside of ID Software.”
He cautioned that Microsoft’s internal changes make older information increasingly difficult to rely on, saying, “What may have been true even three months ago may no longer be true.”
Red Dead Redemption 2 Could Also Come To Switch 2
Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 is another major title Nate has heard is planned for Nintendo’s console. Unlike Starfield and Doom The Dark Ages, his comments suggest that the project remains something he expects to eventually happen, although its timing is unclear.
“I mean, Red Dead 2 is something I have heard supposed to be coming over to Switch 2. Hasn’t been announced yet,” Nate said.
The potential release could be complicated by Rockstar’s current focus on Grand Theft Auto 6. Nate explained that he would be reluctant to expect two major Rockstar releases in close succession, adding that “all eyes are on GTA 6 right now.”
