Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy 2 has climbed from the 4th to 3rd highest rated game of all time on Metacritic after 16 years.
The best games of all time list (via caffeinehater95 on Reddit) on Metacritic has been updated with some interesting changes, bumping Super Mario Galaxy 2 from the 4th to 3rd spot 16 years after the game’s release on May 23, 2010, for the Nintendo Wii. This comes as a surprise, given how long it has been since the 3D platformer hit store shelves. It’s possible that a publication with a high-scoring review has seen an increase in weightage, in turn improving the game’s aggregate Metascore from 97 to 98.

Released in 2010 for the Wii, Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the sequel to 2007’s Super Mario Galaxy. Players control Mario as he journeys through numerous galaxies to defeat Bowser, rescue Princess Peach, and restore balance by collecting Power Stars and Grand Stars. Initially conceived as an expanded edition of the original game, it evolved into a full sequel after developers introduced many new concepts, including Yoshi, fresh power-ups, and dynamic environments. Later, an enhanced Nintendo Switch edition added higher resolution, interface improvements, assist features, a new storybook, 4K support, and a new epilogue chapter.
