A datamine of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake game files has hinted at the possibility of paid Master Quest DLC.

BlueSky user MrCheeze, who has been investigating the game’s files, discovered several strings in the executable filesystem (exefs) that suggest Master Quest DLC may be planned for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake. These include references such as “HasMQ”, “IsMQModeExist”, “NewGameMQ”, and “ReleaseMQ”.

Further insight came from Twitter/X user OatmealDome, who examined additional data associated with the potential Master Quest DLC. According to their findings, the mode appears to be unlocked by “owning DLC”, indicating that it will be a separate paid expansion rather than content delivered through a free game update.

OatmealDome also uncovered some details about what the potential expansion could include. The available data indicates that Master Quest features a mirrored world and modified dungeons, with changes to dungeon layouts and encounters. One example reportedly involves cows appearing inside Jabu-Jabu’s Belly.

Interestingly, their investigation suggests that the modifications are currently limited to dungeons, with no apparent changes to the game’s overworld. The accompanying datamined files also contain numerous dungeon room identifiers and completion flags, providing further evidence of dedicated Master Quest content.

However, there are important caveats. The available data is incomplete, and Nintendo could alter its plans or implementation in a future update. Furthermore, the files currently appear to check for just one downloadable content package, internally referred to as the “MQ” DLC.

An interesting observation regarding the Happy Mask Salesman in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake hints at the possibility of a Majora’s Mask remake. In the original, the character never wore a gold bracelet, and it was only in the sequel, Majora’s Mask, that he was seen wearing one. In the new version, however, his redesigned character model is indeed wearing a gold bracelet, suggesting that some of the groundwork for a future remake may already have been laid.
