Undead Labs and The Coalition are working together to use Unreal Engine 5 and incorporate Gears of War technology into State of Decay 3.
Speaking during Major Nelson’s podcast on Gamescom and PAX, vice president Xbox Game Studios Matt Booty shared some new details regarding the latest entry in the State of Decay series i.e. State of Decay 3.
Matt discussed that the studio is collaborating with the Unreal Engine 5 experts at The Coalition to incorporate some of the technology that went into the development of Gears of War titles into State of Play 3. He added that he spent all day at Undead Labs in Seattle last week to get the latest update on the progress of State of Decay 3’s development.
Matt also mentioned that State of Decay 2 continues to grow its user base, and the game has now reached a new milestone, having crossed 11 million life to date players. The things Undead Labs has been doing with State of Decay 2 since its release are essentially the test bed for things that will go into State of Decay 3.
State of Decay 2 is a third-person zombie survival game with an emphasis on scavenging for items. The game has cooperative gameplay with up to three other players and is set in an open world. In order to keep survivors safe and healthy, the player can construct a base in one of several locations, then fortify and improve it with a variety of amenities like watchtowers, gardens, sleeping quarters, kitchens, workshops, and medical bays. Managing the use of resources, such as food, medicine, ammunition, and building supplies, is a key aspect of the game. They are available through trading with NPCs or scavenging.
Outside of their own group, survivors can be interacted with by the player through trade, assistance, or recruitment. The player can ask an AI-controlled survivor to accompany them, and in some missions, one or more AI-controlled survivors will accompany the player. However, only one survivor can be controlled at a time. Additionally, there are options for cooperative multiplayer, which let players temporarily add a friend to their team to help them achieve goals.
