Universal Pictures has an untitled Nintendo and Illumination movie scheduled for release almost two years from now in April, 2028.

According to the updated release schedule listed on the official Universal Pictures Spain website, the company has an untitled Nintendo and Illumination animated movie lined up for theaters on April 12, 2028. No details regarding the director or actors are mentioned in the listing.

At this point, it’s tough to say whether this untitled movie is a new entry in the Super Mario Bros Movie series. In March, during an interview with Cinemex, Jack Black, who plays the role as Bowser in the animated adaptations, seemed to have inadvertently hinted at the release window for the third film. Towards the end of the interview, after performing an impromptu Bowser song, he said, “Don’t be surprised if you hear that coming out next time. It was good in 2029. Thank you so much for your time, guys.” While the remark was delivered in a casual and lighthearted manner, it suggested that the third Super Mario Bros movie may be scheduled for release in 2029.

Meanwhile, while discussing his approach to character inclusion in a recent interview with Polygon, legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto said, “Right off the bat, I’ll say that unlike something like Super Smash Bros, I don’t think you’ll have a situation [where] all Nintendo characters would be joining. As you know, my rule is that Pikmin can appear in any [Nintendo] series.” This rules out the possibility of a Super Smash Bros movie.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the second entry in the Super Mario Bros Movie series, received a theatrical release on April 1, 2026. The digital launch is expected to happen on May 5, 2026, across several PVOD platforms, including Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Prime Video, and YouTube Movies and TV. The listed price is $24.99, which is in line with typical premium video-on-demand releases for recent theatrical titles.
