New PlayStation DRM Apparently Implemented To Prevent License Exploit, Removed After Refund Window Ends

The new PlayStation digital DRM restriction has apparently been implemented in order to prevent a license exploit, and is removed after the refund window ends.

According to the findings of ResetEra member andshrew, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s controversial DRM restriction for newly purchased PlayStation games may actually be a temporary safeguard designed to prevent a specific type of license exploit. The discussion originated from reports that some newly purchased PlayStation titles require online validation after every 30 days, limiting offline access after said period. However, through hands-on testing with a jailbroken PS4, the Reset Era member claims to have found that this requirement is not permanent. Instead, it appears to transition into a standard, indefinite license once the refund window has passed.

Based on the Reset Era member’s findings, PlayStation initially assigns a 30-day license to newly purchased content rather than granting immediate permanent ownership. In their example, a game purchased on April 9, 2026, received a temporary license when accessed on April 21, 2026. After installation on April 25, 2026, the system indicated roughly 26 days of offline play remaining. However, within 30 minutes, that temporary license was automatically replaced with a permanent one.

On the other hand, a second game purchased on April 27, 2026, continued to carry the 30-day restriction, further indicating that the transition depends on how long the game has been owned. The key difference between the two cases is that the first title had surpassed PlayStation Network’s 14-day refund window, while the second hadn’t.

The Reset Era member speculated that Sony Interactive Entertainment may have introduced the temporary DRM measure to combat a potential loophole that allowed users to purchasing a game, extract its permanent license file via modified hardware, and then refund the purchase while retaining access. By issuing a time-limited license initially, the console maker is likely ensuring that permanent licenses are only granted once refunds are no longer possible.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has yet to make an official statement on the matter.
