Microsoft has introduced Xbox disc to digital licensing, giving Xbox Insiders a new way to access supported games without keeping the physical disc inserted. The feature goes live for Xbox Insiders today and applies to eligible Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs.
When a supported disc is used while signed into an Xbox account, Microsoft will grant a digital license associated with that physical copy. Once claimed, the game can be accessed without having the disc inserted, although not every Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc is eligible.
Eligibility can vary because of technical, licensing, publishing and manufacturing factors, and Microsoft says it may change over time. Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs are not supported by the feature.
Xbox Play Anywhere Support
The new Xbox disc to digital licensing system also supports Xbox Play Anywhere titles. After claiming a digital license on an Xbox console, eligible Play Anywhere games can be found in the Xbox app on PC and handhelds and installed there without requiring the physical disc.
Players can check their claimed games by going to My Games & apps, See all, Full library and All games on Xbox. Games obtained through disc to digital licensing will display a dedicated licensing badge.
Microsoft also provides an option to claim several discs more efficiently. Players can disable the Play disc automatically setting under Settings, Devices & connections and Disc, then insert their games one at a time and select Get digital license followed by Claim.
Physical Disc Ownership Still Matters
Although the digital license removes the need to keep the disc inserted while playing, players may still need to demonstrate that they possess the qualifying physical disc. Microsoft says that selling, giving away, losing or otherwise no longer possessing the disc can result in the associated digital license being limited or revoked.
If access is lost, players can regain possession of the original disc and use it while signed into their account, or purchase a new digital version through the Microsoft Store.
Multi-Disc Games and Add-On Content
For games distributed across multiple discs, only the first disc can be used to claim a digital license. The other discs in the set cannot be used for this purpose.
Eligible editions that include additional content on the qualifying disc may also provide access to that content through the digital license. However, promotional items, downloadable content and other benefits provided through separate redemption codes are not included.
The feature therefore provides a new bridge between physical Xbox game ownership and Microsoft’s digital ecosystem, while retaining restrictions around eligible discs and continued possession of the physical copy.
