Resident Evil Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi has shared details on the game’s initial concept, upcoming DLC minigame, Leon’s ring, and Ada’s absence.

During a recent interview with denfaminicogamer (via Genki_JPN on Twitter/X), Resident Evil Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi and producer Masato Kumazawa shared details on its initial concept and upcoming DLC minigame. They also addressed fan queries regarding Leon’s ring and Ada’s absence from the game.

According to Nakanishi, the project began simply as “Leon and Raccoon City.” However, the development team soon realized that this alone wouldn’t deliver the kind of emotional horror experience it was aiming for. This led to the expansion of Grace, originally a supporting character, into a fully playable co-protagonist alongside Leon Kennedy. The dual-protagonist structure ultimately allowed the developers to blend Leon’s seasoned experience with Grace’s more vulnerable, fear-driven journey.

Nakanishi described the development process as a philosophy of “subtraction.” Rather than overloading the game with content, the team frequently cut or reworked material, including an entire “phantom Chapter 2”, to maintain pacing and clarity. He explained that “sometimes the overall result is better if certain elements are omitted.”

The director also talked about the “The Final Puzzle” puzzle. Designed to take at least two weeks to solve, it was cracked far quicker thanks to global player collaboration. He mentioned being surprised by how rapidly “collective intelligence” unraveled what the team believed was an extremely obscure challenge.

Furthermore, Nakanishi addressed speculation regarding the ring seen on Leon’s left hand. According to him, while the detail reflects Leon’s growth, “that ‘someday’ [for answers] isn’t now.” Meanwhile, the absence of Ada Wong was a deliberate narrative choice. Although considered during development, the development team ultimately felt her inclusion wasn’t necessary for the story it wanted to tell.

Meanwhile, Kumazawa confirmed that a post-launch DLC minigame for Resident Evil Requiem is nearly complete. Described as a single-player experience built around combat from the main game, it is unlocked upon completing the story and is intended for those looking for more action. The minigame promises an intense experience, one that, in Nakanishi’s words, will make players go “Whoa!!” The description sounds  a lot like a Mercenaries mode, traces of which were spotted via recent datamine.
