A remastered version of Activision and Raven Software’s 2009 first-person shooter, Wolfenstein, may be getting shadow dropped at the upcoming QuakeCon 2026.
According to the SteamDB page for 2009’s Wolfenstein (via AnonimoGames_ and IdleSloth84_ on Twitter/X), the game recently had its original release date of August 18, 2009, removed and is now being listed as Steam Deck verified, indicating that a remastered version may be in the works. With QuakeCon 2026 set to begin tomorrow on August 6, 20226, it may be getting shadow dropped during the 30th-anniversary even.
It’s also worth noting that Wolfenstein has been de-listed across all digital stores, lending further credibility to the possibility of a remastered release. It’s unclear whether existing owners of the 2009 original will receive an upgrade path, but it looks like we won’t have to wait long to find out.
Last month, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier mentioned Wolfenstein among the established franchises that ZeniMax Media will pivot its resources towards as part of its major overhaul. As such, a remastered version of the 2009 game would align with these plans. “Studios in the Bethesda organization like id Software (Doom) and ZeniMax Online Studios (Elder Scrolls Online) are not shutting down but are cutting a significant number of staff this morning, per sources,” said Schreier. While no additional details were provided regarding how resources will be redistributed internally, the strategy suggests Microsoft intends to focus development efforts on franchises with the strongest commercial recognition and long-term growth potential. The restructuring is part of a much larger transformation underway at Xbox following the appointment of Asha Sharma as CEO earlier this year.
For the uninitiated, 2009’s Wolfenstein is an indirect sequel to Return to Castle Wolfenstein that was released on August 18, 2009, across Windows PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. The story follows special agent William “B.J.” Blazkowicz, who infiltrates the German battleship Tirpitz to steal a mysterious medallion from a Nazi general.
