IO Interactive’s 007 First Light has enjoyed a strong start at UK retail, becoming the second biggest physical game launch of 2026 in the region.
The sales update comes from The Game Business editor-in-chief Christopher Dring, who shared on social media that “007 First Light did pretty well at physical retail. Second biggest launch of the year in the UK (behind Resident Evil Requiem).”
The performance adds to what has already been a promising commercial debut for IO Interactive’s James Bond title. Earlier, the developer announced that 007 First Light had surpassed 1.5 million copies sold worldwide shortly after launch, marking an important milestone for the studio’s first original Bond game.
The game’s sales momentum is particularly noteworthy given its reported development costs. According to a report from Danish outlet DR, 007 First Light spent seven years in production and carried a budget of approximately 1.3 billion Danish Kroner, or around $202.8 million. The report stated that the game “has been seven years in the making and has cost a staggering 1.3 billion kroner to develop.”
Based on that reported figure, industry observers have estimated that the title would need to sell roughly 3 million copies at its standard $70 retail price across platforms to recover development costs, assuming marketing expenses are included in the reported budget. Neither IO Interactive nor publisher representatives have publicly commented on the game’s break-even point.
Released on May 27, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, 007 First Light serves as a standalone origin story for James Bond. The game follows a 26-year-old Bond during the early stages of his career as he uncovers a global conspiracy while earning his status as a 00 agent. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is also planned for a later date.
With more than 1.5 million copies already sold and a strong retail debut in one of Europe’s largest gaming markets, 007 First Light appears to be off to a solid start as IO Interactive continues its long-term investment in the James Bond franchise.
