IO Interactive’s latest action-adventure game, 007 First Light, reportedly has a budget of around 200 million US Dollars, and it needs sales of approximately 3 million copies just to break even.

According to a report from Danish website DR, 007 First Light has been in production for 7 years, with a development cost of 1.3 billion Danish Kroner (around 202.8 million US Dollars). “[007 First Light] has been seven years in the making and has cost a staggering 1.3 billion kroner to develop,” the article states. It’s not clear whether marketing costs are factored into the mentioned budget.

Assuming the stated budget of approximately 202.8 million US Dollars for 007 First Light does indeed include marketing expenses, it would mean that the game requires sales of around 3 million copies at its full price of 70 US Dollars across all platforms in order to break even.

While we don’t have any sales figures as of writing, we do know that 007 First Light has gained a peak concurrent player count of 68,477 (via SteamDB) on Steam since its launch. Going by concurrent user stats-to-sales comparisons for other titles, this likely translates to around 400,000 copies sold on Valve’s digital platform. If it sells close to 600,000 units across PlayStation and Xbox, it may achieve overall sales of around 1 million copies in its first week. This would leave the remaining 2 million units it would still need to sell at full price before breaking even.

Daniel Ahmad, Director of Research and Insights at Niko Partners, recently shared that opening sales of 007 First Light weren’t tracking well at the time. He mentioned that IO Interactive had run an old-school marketing campaign for 007 First Light so far that wasn’t getting much traction outside of people who grew up with the 007 franchise.

007 First Light is now available across PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X|S. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is planned for release later this year.
