Bethesda has silently dropped the classic DOOM Trilogy on PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch today, but all three games had one-time activation requirement, which might be made optional now.
After the DOOM trilogy was released, it was soon discovered that the games require you to connect to the official Bethesda servers with a Bethesda account. This was required one-time only but it was a mandatory activation. Since these classic DOOM games are ported to almost every new platform and never had these requirements, it quickly led to a backlash from fans.
Bethesda has now shared an update on the online activation and confirmed that they will make it optional in a future update. They also explained why this was put in the game in the first place.
Update on our new classic DOOM releases: The BethesdaNet login requirement was included for the Slayers Club, to reward members for playing the classic DOOM games. The login should be optional, and we are working on changing the requirement to optional now.
When this was first reported that the games required online, it was discovered that there was already a quick fix available for the Nintendo Switch owners that could bypass the online activation. This means it was possible to remove it with an update, and now Bethesda appears to be releasing an update to make it optional.
DOOM Trilogy is available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. You can get the first two games for $5 while the third one is available for $10.
