Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2 has been in development since the launch of the Remake last year, and the devs recently had shared a little more about it.
In a new discussion panel at CEDEC+ Kyushu 2020 Online, the game co-director Naoki Hamaguchi, and producer Yoshinori Kitase, talked about the upcoming sequel and what they are planning to do with it. All credit for the interview and its translation goes to aitaikimochi on Twitter.
The game’s co-director, Hamaguchi talked about their ambitious plans for the world outside Midgar. “When creating FF7R, we decided to have the entire game take place in Midgar, and we created a realistic world within Midgar, ” said Hamaguchi. “For example, in the original game, you didn’t really have a sense of what it would look like to gaze up at the plate from the viewpoint of the slums, but we were able to visualize that in the Remake. In Part 2, we want to take that type of detail and allow users to experience how they experienced Midgar in the Remake but with the rest of the world.”
When the interviewer asked for clarification if he was referring to the world outside of Midgar, the co-director replied: “That’s correct. Unfortunately, that’s all I can reveal about Part 2 right now.”
While the first part of Final Fantasy 7 Remake takes place entirely in Midgar, those who have played the original game will remember that it shifts to an open world once the main party goes out of the city. There are many other cities in the open world of Final Fantasy 7 Remake but due to the changed nature of the story, it is impossible to predict what the developers have lined up for the sequel.
The game’s producer Kitase also talked about how they want to change up the story, but in a good way. “Those who played the original game probably know what happens in the story and are curious as to what will happen now, ” said Kitase.
“However, because they know the story, this gives us the opportunity to deliver them something they expect that allows them to think ‘oh, so this is what actually happened!’ yet also show them something that not only surprises, but also goes beyond their expectations. Because we have the original game already, if we can express these elements well, it can turn into something that users can definitely look forward to! We did this in Part 1 too. For those who played Part 1, they already have an idea of what kind of game we are making. We want to create a game that lives up to their expectations but also throws them off, in a good way though.”
Final Fantasy 7 Remake is rumored to get a PS5 upgrade. It can be announced as soon as this February, although there is nothing official on this front as of yet. The game is a timed exclusive and it has been rumored that it might launch on PC along with the PS5 upgrade once this timed exclusivity expires.
