First of all, we learn that PS5 won’t arrive in the market until 2020. We have already posted about it as a rumor earlier this year so this seems to be the only official confirmation that you will need for today.
PS5 Official Hardware Specs: How Powerful Is It?
- 8 core AMD 7nm Zen 2 based on third-generation Ryzen
- Ray-tracing support with custom AMD Navi GPU
- Custom AMD unit for 3D Audio with support for Ray-tracing
- High-speed SSD storage with speed faster than any current consumer product
- Support for resolution up to 8K
- Full backward compatibility with PS4
- Backward compatible with PSVR
These specs just give us a basic overview of the PS5, which has been in development for the past four years. Sony has started to give the developers devkits so that they can prepare for its launch which will happen in 2020. There is no E3 2019 event by Sony this year so we will have to wait for a while before they announce their next-generation console.
There was no figure given on the TFLOPs that will accompany this hardware upgrade but an earlier rumor stated that Sony and Microsoft are aiming higher than 10.7 TFLOPs which are the target for Google Stadia.
Some of the key improvements mentioned for PS5 include insanely fast load times. Marvel’s Spider-Man was shown as an example and the load times for fast travel were reduced from 15 seconds to just under one second. This will allow the developers to stop worrying about incorporating techniques like loading screens or other tricks to stream in-game data.
3D Audio was mentioned as another big point where the players will now be able to hear audio from various directions and while Headphone will amplify the experience, the better audio will be possible thanks to special 3D Audio hardware and ray-tracing so it won’t really need any special equipment or speakers.
Sony hasn’t disclosed any more details on when they expect to reveal any more information on the PS5 but the launch is planned for 2020. Death Stranding is possibly targeting both the PS4 and PS5 and likely won’t be out this year.
