Sony Interactive Entertainment and Team Asobi’s 2020 platformer, Astro’s Playroom, can now run on PC via PS5 emulator KYTY.

Twitter/X user iExplosiveRage has shared a video clip of PS5 exclusive Astro’s Playroom running on PC via the KYTY emulator. The performance is extremely poor and it is far from playable, but it’s major progress. The emulator has received rapid improvement within a matter of days.

Meanwhile, the PS5 Demon’s Souls remake has also made great progress, despite not yet being in a playable state. The game’s opening section now runs anywhere between 20 and 30 fps, as seen in the video below.

GameMill Entertainment and Cradle Games’ action game, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Wrath of the Mutants, and Microïds and PlayMagic’s first-person shooter, XIII, are also able to run at frame rates close to 30 fps. Plenty of work still needs to be done, however. There are currently plenty of graphical issues, such as the entire floor and skybox not being rendered in the latter. They’re also prone to game crashes at this point in time.

Regardless of how one may feel about the current state of the emulator, there’s no denying the tremendous amount of progress it has made in very little time. As such, both Kyty (Github page) and the Vulkan-based SharpEmu (Github page) PS5 emulators are worth keeping an eye on for future milestones.

The development of PS5 emulators appears to have become a priority for enthusiast developers soon after Sony Interactive Entertainment announced its exit from the physical games market. It also helps that the release of Rockstar Games’ open-world action-adventure game, GTA VI, is on the horizon, and the juggernaut not coming to PC at launch likely serves as key motivation. That said, if rumors are to be believed, it may arrive sooner rather than later.
