Doom: The Dark Ages director Hugo Martin has assured fans that id Software and id Tech are both “alive and well”, and that the development team is excited to share details on the studio’s next game.
During an official livestream with Bethesda Softworks Senior Community Lead Joshua Boyle following the launch of Doom: The Dark Ages’ Revelations expansion, director Hugo Martin addressed reports surrounding the future of id software, saying that both the studio and its proprietary id Tech engine are “alive and well”, and that the development team is already looking forward to sharing details on its next game. “There’s been reports that we’ve been, you know, nerfed into the ground and gutted, and we are not,” he said. “We’re the size we were when we made DOOM (2016).”
Martin’s statement comes after reports claimed that id Software was left in a crippled state after Xbox’s recent layoffs. While he acknowledged that some employees have departed, he denied these reports and also dismissed concerns over the future of the studio’s idTech engine. “id Tech is very much alive and well,” Martin explained. “You have to understand we have id Tech engineers both in Frankfurt and at MachineGames. We collaborate quite a bit. So, you know, the id Tech is there, the Doom team is here.”
The Doom: The Dark Ages director also confirmed that id Software is already working on its next project. “We’re excited to share with you guys more of what we’re working on in the future when it is appropriate and approved,” he said. Elsewhere during the stream, he also reiterated his desire to continue exploring the Doom universe, saying the door remains open to eventually complete the story leading up to the Slayer’s sarcophagus.
Doom: The Dark Ages was released on May 15, 2025, across PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X|S.
