Square Enix has announced that the Dragon Quest franchise has surpassed 100 million units sold worldwide, marking a major milestone for the long-running RPG series during its 40th anniversary year.
The franchise began with the original Dragon Quest in Japan in 1986 and has since grown to include 11 mainline games, numerous spin-offs, and adaptations across film, anime, novels and manga. Square Enix says the series has established itself as a major name in the JRPG genre over its four-decade history.
The 100 million sales milestone comes as Square Enix continues to revisit several of the franchise’s older entries. Recent releases include Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake and Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, which together recreate the Erdrick Trilogy with the HD-2D visual style, additional story content and gameplay updates.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined was released earlier in 2026, offering a new version of 2000’s Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. The remake uses a handcrafted 3D art style with diorama-inspired environments and dungeons, while also introducing streamlined exploration and expanded narrative elements.
The series’ 40th anniversary celebrations are continuing with several upcoming releases. Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD- recently launched, giving players another opportunity to revisit an older entry in the franchise.
The next mainline game, Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams, remains in development, although Square Enix has not provided further details on its release as part of this announcement.
Meanwhile, Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on September 24. The acclaimed RPG will give Switch 2 owners another opportunity to experience the latest numbered mainline entry ahead of the franchise’s next instalment.
Another new release is also on the way in the Dragon Quest Monsters series. Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World is scheduled to launch on December 3, 2026, for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, PC via Steam, and Xbox on PC.
Square Enix is also marking the 100 million sales milestone with a celebration video featuring Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii. The announcement comes as the publisher continues expanding the series through remakes, spin-offs and new mainline entries while celebrating four decades of Dragon Quest.
