The Physical copy of the PS5 version of Xbox Game Studios and Playground Games’ upcoming action role-playing game, Fable, contains the full game data, while the Xbox Series X|S disc requires “content download.”
The Best Buy store page (via user Kamiya-meha on the ResetEra forums) for Fable reveals that the PS5 disc will contain the full game data, while the Xbox Series X|S physical copy will require additional “content download.” This is likely due to PS5 discs being capable of holding up to 100GB of data compared to Xbox discs carrying 50GB.
The difference comes down to the Blu-ray drive in the PS5 having the ability to read higher capacity dual-layer discs, while Xbox Series X drives are limited to single-layer. Even so, it’s rather interesting to see that an Xbox first-party game will be playable right off the disc on PS5 but will require a potentially hefty download on Microsoft’s current-gen consoles. This ultimately comes down to the physical games market no longer being a major priority for Xbox.
During the recent Xbox Games Showcase, Microsoft announced that Fable will launch on February 23, 2027, for Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and PS5, following its prior delay from a planned 2026 release window. It is developed by Playground Games, best known for the Forza Horizon series. Alongside the announcement, the company reiterated the game’s core premise, describing it as an immersive open-world action RPG where player decisions play a central role in shaping the experience. According to the publisher, players will be able to “Become the Hero you want to be in an immersive open-world action-RPG where each choice shapes your journey, reputation is everything, and fairytale endings are never guaranteed.” Set in the fantasy world of Albion, the reboot aims to blend the series’ signature humor and choice-driven storytelling with a modern open-world structure.
