Final Fantasy XVI was one of the major game announcements during their PS5 showcase earlier this month. It is apparently in development for a while.
Final Fantasy XVI is being developed by Square Enix’s Creative Business Division 3 under the direction of Hiroshi Takai. is According to Jason Schreier, who has a solid track record with leaks, the game has been in development at some capacity for the past four years.
In the latest Triple Click podcast, Jason shared this new tidbit about the game being in development for a while. He also says that this might be out sooner than people think. According to some fan theories, the development staff of Heavensward was shifted to a new project after the release of the expansion in 2015. It is speculated that around this time, work on a brand new Final Fantasy was started.
Final Fantasy XVI was revealed during the PS5 showcase with a lengthy trailer that also included plenty of gameplay footage. More details around the game are planned for 2021 and there is nothing shared regarding a potential release date. The game supposedly entered full production last year which coincided with a recruitment drive at the studio.
Currently, it is only confirmed for the PS5 even though the trailer mentioned that it will also arrive on PC, but it was shortly removed and the game was mentioned as a PS5 exclusive.
Naoki Yoshida has worked on the Final Fantasy XIV reboot and he also handles the expansions released for the MMO so far. He is currently serving as the producer on this upcoming Final Fantasy game while Hiroshi Takai will assume duty as the game director.
