Gears of War Creator Cliff Bleszinski Reveals His Original Ideas for Gears 4 and Future Sequels

Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski has shared extensive details about his original vision for Gears 4 and the future direction he hoped the franchise would take following the events of Gears of War 3.

In a lengthy social media post, Bleszinski discussed early concepts involving the aftermath of the Lambent outbreak and the fate of the Locust Horde. According to him, the original idea was that the Lambent turned to dust at the end of Gears 3 while the remaining Locust entered a dormant state encased within crystalline shells.

Humanity would then retreat into heavily protected “safe zone” cities while cleanup crews attempted to bury the cocooned Locust underground. Bleszinski explained that one of the major creative challenges during early Gears 4 discussions involved finding a new enemy threat suitable for a shooter without simply repeating another “Locust return” storyline.

According to Bleszinski, some developers were hesitant about featuring human enemies due to concerns it would make the protagonists appear morally questionable. He argued that the series had already explored human conflict through the Pendulum Wars and believed violent human factions could still work if presented as a genuine threat.

His proposed enemies reportedly included savage cannibal groups inspired by Mad Max and Firefly’s Reavers, alongside a dangerous narcotic created from the dust left behind by the Lambent. Bleszinski described the fictional substance as a hybrid of cocaine, fentanyl, and krokodil that transformed users into nearly unstoppable fighters before leaving them physically collapsed afterward.

The concept also reportedly involved JD Fenix secretly struggling with addiction while attempting to live up to the legacy of Marcus Fenix. Bleszinski described the story as a metaphorical battle against inner demons.

The biggest twist in his pitch involved the eventual return of the Locust Horde. Rather than simply reappearing unchanged, the creatures would have emerged from hibernation in a transformed “final form” featuring wings and more monstrous appearances.

“Before, they came from below. Now, they come from above,” Bleszinski said while revealing the marketing slogan he envisioned for the sequel concept.

He also commented on the eventual introduction of the Deebees robots in Gears of War 4, explaining that the idea emerged after his departure from the project, as developers sought a fresh enemy type before bringing back the Locust.

Bleszinski ended the post by expressing excitement for the upcoming Gears of War: E-Day reveal from Microsoft and The Coalition, while noting that he still remains fond of the unused winged Locust concept.

The Gears of War franchise originally debuted in 2006 and became one of Xbox’s defining shooter series through its cover-based combat systems, squad-focused gameplay, and gritty science-fiction setting centered around humanity’s war against the Locust Horde on the planet Sera.
