Rockstar Games’ upcoming open-world action-adventure game, GTA VI, may arrive on PC “sooner than people expect,” it is claimed.
During the latest episode of the VGC podcast, the growing demand for PlayStation 5 consoles ahead of the upcoming launch of GTA VI was discussed, prompting co-host Andy Robinson to mention that he’s heard “a bit of noise” about Rockstar Games bringing the PC version forward in response to these unusual market conditions.
“I do think they’ll push the PC version up,” Robinson said, before adding, “There’s a bit of noise about that.” He then clarified that the PC version may “arrive sooner than some people might expect just because of everything that is going on. .” He didn’t mention any specifics regarding his sources, however.
The discussion noted that PlayStation 5 sales in the UK had jumped 33% in the week following the latest GTA VI reveal, while Xbox Series X|S sales reportedly increased by 34%. At the same time, retailers have been experiencing console shortages. The situation is even more severe in the US market, which is seeing supply constraints and substantial increases in console prices. The average price of a PS5 was said to have increased by 33% compared with the previous year, creating a considerably different environment for consumers looking to purchase hardware specifically to play GTA VI.
This situation is what Robinson was referring to when he said the PC version could arrive earlier “because of everything that’s going on.” He also speculated that cloud gaming could become part of the equation. Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick may have hinted at this possibility just last month during the company’s earnings call when he said that the gaming industry will enter “commercial streaming mode” within the next 3 years.
Rockstar Games has historically launched major Grand Theft Auto titles on consoles before bringing them to PC. GTA Online, a major money maker for the developer, earns a vast majority of its revenue via PlayStation and Xbox consoles.
