Disney has confirmed that the Kingdom Hearts franchise has generated more than $1 billion in retail revenue, making it one of nine gaming franchises in the company’s portfolio to reach the milestone.
The figure was revealed in an official Disney article discussing the company’s gaming strategy. Disney Games Group executive Shoptaw said the company has established a “really foundational footprint in games today,” with its portfolio now including “nine games that have grossed over $1 billion at retail.” He explained that the strategy is focused on creating original stories that are particularly suited to the gaming medium.
Kingdom Hearts is one of the nine billion-dollar franchises alongside Marvel Strike Force. According to Disney, more than half of these franchises have been established within the past 12 years.
The Kingdom Hearts franchise was created through a collaboration between Square Enix and Disney, with the original game launching in 2002. The action RPG series follows Sora as he travels between Disney-inspired worlds alongside characters such as Donald Duck and Goofy.
Kingdom Hearts III was released in 2019 and brought the long-running Dark Seeker Saga towards its conclusion, followed by the Re Mind expansion. The rhythm-action spin-off Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory launched in 2020.
The franchise is set to receive another release later this year, with a collection of Kingdom Hearts games scheduled to arrive on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 on October 8, 2026. Square Enix is also continuing development of Kingdom Hearts IV, the next mainline entry in the series.
