The next game in the Halo franchise will be a reboot, and the existing lore will be discarded, it is claimed.
According to Twitter/X user TechnicalHalo, who has leaked details on past Halo projects, the next game in the series will be a reboot and the existing lore will be discarded. “This is a reboot, a new chapter, lore is not going to be continued,” they said. When asked whether they were referring to a complete reboot or a partial one that only discards games after a certain point, such as beyond Halo 3, they mentioned that their source hasn’t yet offered clarification in this regard.
Microsoft recently cut roles at Halo Studios as part of its ongoing restructuring. Going forward, Activision will oversee development of the next Halo game through a new team separate from Call of Duty development, while a smaller team at Halo Studios will continue supporting existing Halo games and the community.
The insider pointed out that Activision has already assembled a team to work on the next Halo game, which is expected to feature both a campaign and multiplayer modes.
Earlier this month, Halo insider and content creator Rebs Gaming shared details from a Halo developer’s portfolio website, according to which Halo Studios had started working on a “pre-greenlight project” and had been playtesting it to prove its core gameplay and out-of-match systems. As he explained, pre-greenlight means the project has not yet received approval to enter full production. The content creator connected this information to an earlier report from one of his sources, who claimed that Halo Studios had prototyped and playtested PvP multiplayer using the hybrid engine developed for Campaign Evolved. He also reported that the studio recently met with members of the Halo community and indicated that a major announcement was planned for Halo Fest. It looks like these plans have been scrapped with the franchise handed over to Activision.
