The future of the Halo 2 allegedly remake remains uncertain, as Campaign Evolved art director Yibo Liu “sincerely hopes” to see “more great things.”
In his latest video, Halo insider and content creator Rebs Gaming has claimed that the rumored Halo 2 remake is still planned but may face an uncertain future following the troubled development of Campaign Evolved. A direct source recently told him that Halo Studios was forced to go “all hands on deck” to complete Campaign Evolved, leading to the cancellation of a multiplayer project, codenamed Project Eker, and creating uncertainty around the studio’s future roadmap. The same source also told him that it remains unclear whether the Halo 2 remake will successfully make it through development.
Rebs also discussed a recent LinkedIn post from Halo Studios Technical art director Yibo Liu on the release of Campaign Evolved. “‘The fight may be finished—but the legend is only beginning again.’ I sincerely hope this game leads to even more great things in the future,” said Liu. Rebs views the art director’s expression of sincere hope as a possible indication that the Halo 2 remake isn’t guaranteed. Despite the reported uncertainty, Rebs highlighted the hints dropped in the secret ending and post-credits scene in Halo: Campaign Evolved as signs that Halo Studios does still plan to revisit Halo 2.
Rebs’ source also mentioned that, several months ago, creative director John Williams led a team that prototyped PvP multiplayer using Campaign Evolved’s hybrid engine, likely for future Halo projects. The content creator previously reported that Williams was hired to work on Project Eker before being moved to Campaign Evolved after the project’s cancellation. Going by his prior experience working on Call of Duty: Warzone and Apex Legends, Rebs believes he was brought in to lead the future of Halo multiplayer.
The content creator also highlighted a narrative design director job listing that he believes points to a separate Halo campaign project currently in concept or pre-production. The listing states that the role will be responsible for establishing narrative direction early in development.
