Capcom has announced that Onimusha: Way of the Sword sold more than 1 million units worldwide on its launch day, marking a strong return for the long-running action series. The game’s performance has also pushed total Onimusha sales beyond 10 million units worldwide.
Released on September 4, Onimusha: Way of the Sword is the first new entry in the franchise in more than 20 years. The game puts players in the role of Miyamoto Musashi and is set in Edo-era Kyoto, combining the series’ sword-focused combat with a new story and updated visuals.
Capcom says it used several promotional efforts ahead of release to build awareness for the game. These included multiple demo releases and hands-on events, which the company says helped introduce Onimusha: Way of the Sword to a wider audience.
The game is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. It marks the latest attempt by Capcom to bring one of its dormant franchises back with a new installment.
The publisher has said that it intends to continue making use of its existing portfolio of intellectual properties, including series that have not received a new game in recent years. Onimusha: Way of the Sword’s launch performance gives the franchise a notable milestone, with the series now having sold more than 10 million games since the original title debuted in 2001.
