PS5 Slim Gets Another Hardware Revision With Replaceable Battery & New Cooling System

The PS5 Slim hardware has reportedly received a hardware revision once again, with a replaceable battery and a new cooling system.

Console and controller technician Modyfikator89 took to Twitter/X to report that Sony Interactive Entertainment has quietly introduced a new PS5 Slim motherboard revision inside the Wolverine Limited Edition console. According to him, the new EDM-051 motherboard brings several changes compared with previous Slim revisions.

Among the prominent changes is the ability to easily replace the CR2032 battery like on the PS5 Pro. The motherboard also features a different layout, a redesigned and simplified internal structure, and a revised cooling system. The Twitter/X user also noted that the heatsink has a noticeably different construction and material compared with earlier PS5 Slim revisions. Additionally, Sony Interactive Entertainment has switched to a newer, lower-cost and more optimized HDMI re-timer implementation.

The new hardware changes come after Sony Interactive Entertainment already revised the PS5 Slim’s cooling system in 2025. According to Modyfikator89, the area around the APU and its protective surface now looks different, while the liquid-metal containment appears closer to the PS5 Pro’s design. The revised protection exposes less of the processor area directly to the liquid metal, helping in keeping the material better contained around the APU.

Despite these internal changes, the revised PS5 Slim still comes with older documentation that doesn’t mention the newly replaceable CR2032 battery.

The console comes with firmware 13.20 installed, which can now be jailbroken. Recent developments in the PS5 homebrew scene allowed hackers to make significant progress toward expanding access to newer console software versions. The Slopkit is a project that is being prepared to support several newer PS5 firmware versions, opening the door to a WebKit-based entry point. In his recent YouTube video, modding enthusiast and content creator MODDED_WARFARE revealed that a jailbreak for PS5 firmware 13.60, just one version behind the latest firmware 14.00, is now available.
