Santa Monica Studio Confirms God of War Laufey Is a Full AAA Game

Santa Monica Studio has provided several new details about God of War Laufey following the game’s recent announcement, addressing fan questions regarding its release date, scope, and creative leadership.

The developer responded to a number of inquiries on social media after officially unveiling the next mainline entry in the God of War series, which places Faye, also known as Laufey, in the lead role for the first time.

One of the most common questions from fans concerned the game’s release date. While Santa Monica Studio did not provide a launch window, the developer confirmed that more information will be shared in the future. When asked when players could expect a release date announcement, the studio replied, “We’ll share more information on the release date as soon as possible!”

The developer also addressed speculation regarding the scale of the project. Some fans questioned whether God of War Laufey would be a smaller spin-off rather than a major installment comparable to previous entries in the franchise.

In response, Santa Monica Studio confirmed that the game is a full-scale production. When asked whether the title was “not just a short spinoff” but a “full fledged AAA-long hours-game,” the studio responded, “Sure is.”

Another topic discussed by fans was the involvement of longtime God of War creative leader Cory Barlog. Following the reveal, some players wondered why Barlog was not listed as the game’s director.

Santa Monica Studio clarified that Barlog currently serves as the studio’s Head of Creative. According to the developer, “Cory is the Head of Creative at Santa Monica Studio, this involves working with game directors like Ariel Lawrence and guiding the long-term vision for all games in the series.”

The comment confirms that Ariel Lawrence is directing God of War Laufey while Barlog continues to oversee the broader creative direction of the franchise.

God of War Laufey was officially announced as the next mainline chapter in the series and is currently planned exclusively for PlayStation 5. The story centers on Faye, the wife of Kratos and mother of Atreus, who awakens after her death in a mysterious realm known as the Everywhen. According to Santa Monica Studio, her journey will take her through an afterlife populated by gods and creatures drawn from multiple mythologies as she attempts to preserve the future she envisioned for her family.

While a release date has yet to be announced, the latest comments from Santa Monica Studio provide additional clarity on the project’s scope and the team leading development, confirming that God of War Laufey is being positioned as a major new entry in the franchise rather than a smaller side project.
