New Slim PS5 Model Design May Have Been Leaked Ahead Of Official Announcement

A picture of a new slim PS5 model design may have  been leaked ahead of an official announcement from Sony.

A member of a Chinese forum has shared a picture of what appears to be a new slim PS5 model. According to the leaker, they received packaging for this new PS5 hardware revision, which allegedly also contained information regarding a detachable disc drive. A video of the new PS5 model and an image of the packaging can be seen below.

Ps5 slim model

According to the details shared, the height of this PS5 model is around 5 cm thinner than prior models, making it a bit slim in comparison. However, the thickness of the new console is said to be the same as the previous models. Therefore, it’s unlikely that this hardware revision will be branded as the PS5 slim. Nevertheless, it is notably slimmer, and also features a new black colored slit on the front and rear covers. Additionally, there are two Type-C USB ports on the front instead of just one found in prior models.

As always, we urge our readers to take such rumors and speculation with a grain of salt until there is official confirmation. As of writing, Sony has yet to acknowledge the existence of this new hardware revision.

The PlayStation 5 (PS5) is a home video game console developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was announced in April 2019 and launched on November 12, 2020, initially in Australia, Japan, New Zealand, North America, and South Korea, followed by a global release one week later. The PS5 belongs to the ninth generation of video game consoles, alongside Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S consoles, which were also released in the same month.

The Disc Edition PS5 model features an optical disc drive that supports Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, while the Digital Edition is a more affordable option designed for downloading games exclusively, lacking the disc drive. Both variants were released simultaneously.

Key hardware features of the PlayStation 5 include a custom solid-state drive that enables high-speed data streaming, leading to significant improvements in storage performance. It also incorporates an AMD GPU capable of displaying 4K resolution at up to 120 frames per second, along with hardware-accelerated ray tracing for realistic lighting and reflections. The console is equipped with the Tempest Engine, facilitating hardware-accelerated 3D audio effects. Additional features include the DualSense controller, which offers haptic feedback, backward compatibility with the majority of PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR games, and compatibility with the PlayStation VR2 headset.
