Sony Will Pay $7.8M In Lawsuit Settlement For Ending Digital Games Distribution Via Third-Party Retailers

Sony Interactive Entertainment will pay 7.8 million US Dollars in lawsuit settlement for ending distribution of digital games via third-party retailers.

The lawsuit alleged that Sony Interactive Entertainment’s move to centralize sales of digital games exclusively through the PlayStation Store violated federal antitrust laws. Plaintiffs argued that by eliminating competition from retailers that previously sold game-specific vouchers, the company effectively monopolized the market for PlayStation digital games, resulting in higher prices for consumers. Those who are part of the settlement and are entitled to receive payment have been notified via email (via Reset Era member Mattmo831).

Sony Interactive Entertainment has denied all allegations, maintaining that its conduct did not violate any laws or regulations. The court has not ruled on the merits of the claims. As stated in the settlement notice, “The Court has not decided whether Defendant violated any laws,” noting that the agreement is a negotiated resolution rather than a legal judgment.

From the total settlement amount, up to 25% may be allocated to attorneys’ fees, alongside reimbursement for legal costs and service awards totaling 30,000 US Dollars for the named plaintiffs. The remaining funds will be divided among eligible class members. The settlement applies to consumers who purchased digital games via the PlayStation Store between April 1, 2019, and December 31, 2023, that were previously available through third-party code sellers. Eligible users are expected receive compensation distributed directly to their PlayStation Store wallets.

Consumers who qualify are automatically included in the settlement unless they choose to opt out by July 2, 2026. Those who opt out will retain the right to pursue separate legal action but will not receive any portion of the settlement. Alternatively, class members may file objections to the terms within the same deadline.

A final approval hearing is scheduled for October 15, 2026, in the US District Court for the Northern District of California. Once approved, the settlement will conclude the case and resolve related claims against Sony Interactive Entertainment.
