Game assets and source code for Konami and Kojima Productions’ stealth-action game, Metal Gear Solid 2 HD, have reportedly leaked online.

Modders Lance McDonald and Afevis Solmunko (via MGSMGN) took to Twitter/X to share that he full source code and asset library for Metal Gear Solid 2 HD have been leaked, opening new possibilities, such as restoring cut content, uncovering unseen material, as well as preserving and refining the game via future tools.

Metal gear solid 2 source code leaked

Early findings suggest that the scope of the leak goes beyond the HD remaster. Solmunko, known for major contributions to the Metal Gear Solid modding scene such as MGSHDFix, said, “It’s not just the HD versions in the dump, it’s the full source code for the PS2 / Xbox / PC versions, everything up to Vita.” The leak reportedly includes a wealth of previously unseen material. Among the discoveries are “the original E3 trailer script files,” and a “cut Tanker water-escape sequence.” In addition, internal development tools and file editors have been uncovered, allowing modders to delve into the production pipeline behind the game.

Further details hint at how certain controversial elements were handled during development. Solmunko noted that pre-9/11 content, such as Arsenal Gear’s crash sequence into Manhattan, was not entirely removed, but rather disabled. He said, “At a brief glance, Arsenal Gear -> Manhattan crash stuff was censored by simply commenting out code.” He also confirmed the presence of E3 and demo assets.

According to Solmunko, the “HD version was definitely made from OG source, not 100% reverse engineered as people misinterpret from old Bluepoint Games interviews.”

As mentioned earlier, the leak may eventually lead to the restoration of cut content, uncover unused assets, provide further technical insight into the game’s development, and new possibilities for preservation.

Metal Gear Solid 2 HD was originally released in the 2011 HD Collection and is now part of the Master Collection Vol. 1, available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC
