Square Enix Announces Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams Following Development Reboot

by Ali Haider

Square Enix has officially announced Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams during the Dragon Quest Day livestream, confirming that the long-awaited RPG underwent a major development reboot.

The announcement was delivered by Dragon Quest XII executive producer Saito alongside series creator Yuji Horii during the franchise’s 40th anniversary celebrations. According to the team, the project previously known as Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate was restructured after extensive internal discussions regarding the future direction of the series.

“Dragon Quest XII is still currently in development,” Saito said during the presentation. “However, because we have changed the development structure and restarted, I would like to ask you to wait a little longer until its release.”

The producer explained that the original version of The Flames of Fate had been attempting several new ideas and challenges for the franchise. Following repeated discussions with Horii, the development team ultimately decided to rebuild the project using what Saito described as “a new structure.”

“It was a very difficult decision, but I am confident that we will be able to deliver something great as the latest Dragon Quest that more fans can enjoy,” he said.

Square Enix also revealed that the reboot includes a completely new subtitle and logo, formally renaming the game Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams. The livestream featured an early in-development teaser following the announcement.

Yuji Horii briefly discussed the game’s new premise during the presentation, describing it as a story centered around “the adventures of a protagonist who experiences mysterious dreams.”

“I think there is a world spreading out in Beyond Dreams that is surely bright rather than dark,” Horii said. “It has changed from the version we announced previously, but I think everyone will be able to enjoy it.”

Horii also confirmed that the game will continue featuring character designs from the late Akira Toriyama alongside music from Koichi Sugiyama.

Square Enix did not announce platforms or a release window for Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams. The reveal came alongside announcements for Dragon Quest XI S on Nintendo Switch 2 and the newly revealed Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World.
