The Witcher TV show is a huge hit for Netflix putting a spotlight on the series worldwide. It is also leading to a boost in sales of The Witcher 3 game.
CD Projekt Red released the critical and commercial hit The Witcher 3 in 2015. It has sold through more than 20 million copies across PC, PS4, and Xbox One. It also recently launched for the Nintendo Switch and will get an update for it soon. The game is a huge success for CD Projekt Red but despite launching four years ago, it is continuing to sell really well.
After The Witcher show hit Netflix as an original production in December, the demand for The Witcher 3 video game skyrocketed and a lot of people started to play it on PC. It led to a new record of peak concurrent players on Steam for the video game which is something unprecedented in history for a single-player video game.
This effect is not just limited to PC but the PS4 version is also starting to sell a huge amount. The Witcher 3 charted in the top 10 best selling games digitally on the PS4 in December. This is also the same time when Netflix released their show on the streaming platform.
The Witcher 3 did really well in sales, not just in the North America, where it ranked number 7 among the best selling games of the month on the PlayStation Store, it also did great in Europe which is a testament to Netflix’s global strength. While it charted at number 7 in North America, it was lower in Europe, ranking in as 11th best selling game for the whole month. It is still an impressive feat nonetheless.
Netflix has already greenlit a second season for The Witcher which stars Henry Cavil as Geralt of Rivia. It was one of their most popular TV shows in 2019 behind Stranger Things and The Mandalorian on Disney Plus.
