The Lord of the Rings: War in the North has returned on modern platforms with the Legacy Edition, giving the 2011 action RPG a technical upgrade over its original PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions.
Developed by Aspyr, the remaster improves the game’s resolution and frame rate, with the new version supporting up to 60 FPS. Texture and shadow resolution have also been increased, while vegetation has received some visual changes.
The differences between the PS3 and PS5 versions remain largely technical, however. There are no major gameplay or content changes, making the Legacy Edition primarily an effort to bring the previously unavailable game back to modern storefronts.
Released on August 11, 2026, The Lord of the Rings: War in the North: Legacy Edition is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
Aspyr has moved the original Snowblind Engine to 64-bit architecture and updated its renderer to DirectX 12. The remaster also adds several quality-of-life improvements, including refined enemy targeting, gyro controls on consoles and the ability to switch between the three playable characters during gameplay.
Online co-op has also been restored through Epic Online Services, addressing one of the technical limitations surrounding the original release.
War in the North originally launched in November 2011 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. Developed by Snowblind Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, the game followed an original story taking place alongside the events of Tolkien’s wider Lord of the Rings narrative.
The game focused heavily on three-player cooperative combat and character progression, although its reception was mixed at launch. It was eventually removed from digital storefronts in 2019 after the relevant licensing agreements expired.
The Legacy Edition therefore serves less as a substantial remake and more as a technical revival, allowing War in the North to return to current platforms with higher resolution, improved visuals and 60 FPS support.
