Xbox Reportedly Paid More For STALKER 2 Timed Console Exclusivity Than What Was Spent On Development

Xbox reportedly paid more for STALKER 2 timed console exclusivity than what was spent on actual development.

During a recent interview with content creator OLDboi, GSC Game World founder Serhiy Hryhorovych revealed that Xbox paid more for the game’s timed console exclusivity than what had been spent on its development. The discussion largely focused on Microsoft’s strategy of securing high-profile exclusives for Xbox and Game Pass. He explained that for a project on the scale of STALKER 2, developers can negotiate an exclusivity agreement that allows the game to launch on Xbox before PlayStation. He noted that Microsoft has the financial resources to invest heavily in such arrangements because of its overall business and market position.

When asked about the Xbox timed exclusivity agreement, Hryhorovych stated, “We received more than we spent on STALKER 2 from Xbox.” On whether that meant the company had paid more than the game’s development costs, Hryhorovych said that the title had effectively paid for itself before it even began selling.

However, it’s worth noting that Hryhorovych also prefaced parts of the conversation by saying he was bound by a non-disclosure agreement and could not reveal specific details on Microsoft’s deal. As a result, he did not disclose any financial figures or provide additional context regarding which costs were included in his comparison.

According to Hryhorovych, after GSC Game World released STALKER 2’s reveal trailer, Microsoft noticed the large number of views it generated. He claimed the company quickly approached the studio and, within about a week, brought documents for the agreement.

STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl was released first on November 20, 2024, for Xbox Series X|S and PC, including day-one availability through Game Pass, before later arriving on PlayStation 5 a year later on November 20, 2025. The game takes place in the post-apocalyptic Chernobyl exclusion zone around the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
