Xbox Physical Game Box Design Has Changed To Indicate The Inclusion Of Disc & Internet Requirements

by Muhammad Ali Bari

The Xbox physical game box has been redesigned to indicate whether there are internet requirements and if the game disc is included.

A new grey colored bar has been added to the bottom of the Xbox physical game packaging design in order to convey to buyers whether the box includes the game disc versus a download code, and if there are any additional requirements like a constant internet connection. While the intent is good, this has lead to plenty of confusion, as pointed out by Reset Era member Jawmuncher. Read ahead for a comparison between the new and prior box designs.

New vs Previous Xbox Physical Game Box Design

A comparison between the prior (up) and new (down) design of the Xbox physical game box can be seen below.

The change is more subtle than the last redesign, but collectors will undoubtedly find the new grey bar annoying, as it takes away space otherwise available to the game box art.

The idea makes sense, as it’s meant to clearly communicate to buyers what they’re getting. However, the implementation leaves much to be desired, as there are inconsistencies. For example, some titles show a disc icon while also stating an internet requirement elsewhere on the cover, which makes the gray label appear redundant. In another case, the game box still needs to state “download only, no disc” despite already containing the “requires internet” text.

It’s possible that this change was made to facilitate future hardware, such an Xbox gaming handheld. It’s too early to say either way.

Other recent changes at Xbox include the introduction of an Xbox mode for PC that transforms a Windows 11 computer into a console-like experience, complete with a controller-friendly interface, quick app switching, and streamlined performance. The setup process is straightforward, and once enabled, you can freely switch between Xbox mode and the traditional desktop. More details here.
