Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake Scores 37/40 in Famitsu’s First Review, Falling Short of Original’s Perfect Score

Famitsu has published the first review of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake for Nintendo Switch 2, awarding the game a score of 37 out of 40. The four reviewers gave it individual scores of 9, 9, 9, and 10, putting it slightly below the original Nintendo 64 release, which received a perfect 40/40 from the Japanese magazine.

The Zelda Ocarina of Time remake review praised Nintendo’s improvements to the controls, particularly the more comfortable camera system and streamlined gameplay. Reviewers also highlighted the updated visuals, which give Hyrule a richer and more detailed appearance while preserving the original game’s structure.

There were some criticisms, however. The reviewers felt that the overall game design was relatively simple compared to modern releases, and players could occasionally find themselves unsure about where to go next.

The remake introduces several changes intended to make the 1998 adventure more accessible on modern hardware. These include freely adjustable camera controls, motion aiming, expanded level layouts, and full voice acting during cutscenes.

Hyrule Castle Town has also been expanded into a fully explorable area, while towns feature dynamic real-time progression. Nintendo has adopted a stylized realistic visual direction for the remake, updating the environments and characters while retaining the original progression.

The Zelda Ocarina of Time remake review also marks an interesting comparison with the original game’s reception. When Ocarina of Time launched for Nintendo 64 in November 1998, it became one of the first games to receive a perfect score from Famitsu.

The original helped establish several mechanics that became common in 3D action-adventure games, including Z-targeting for locking onto enemies and context-sensitive actions. Its story also introduced the ability to experience Hyrule across two different periods of Link’s life.

Developed for Nintendo Switch 2, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake launches on November 5, 2026, as part of Nintendo’s celebrations marking the franchise’s 40th anniversary.
