Call of Duty 2020 will be made by Treyarch Studios who will work on Call of Duty: Black Ops 5. Activision has removed Sledgehammer Games from the lead developer position for the next game in the series. This year’s Call of Duty is heavily rumored to be Modern Warfare 4 by Infinity Ward.
Call of Duty is a yearly franchise published by Activision. They have a three-year development cycle for the games where three different developers work on it. They started it first with Call of Duty: Ghosts in 2013 and followed it with a new game since then where the developers are rotated after every three years.
Call of Duty 2020 was reportedly in development at Sledgehammer Games, but they were taken off the project as the lead developer and instead Infinity Ward has been promoted as the lead developer. The next game is now going to be Call of Duty: Black Ops 5 and it will be a cross-generation release, as reported by Kotaku. This means it will be out for the PS5 and the next-generation Xbox console in addition to the PS4 and Xbox One.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 5 will also include a campaign mode which is set during the cold war. Kotaku expects this to be the Vietnam War and the lead developers for the campaign are Sledgehammer Games along with Raven Software.
Infinity Ward is working on the current Call of Duty game which will be out this year. It has been leaked that there is a Modern Warfare 2 Remaster also launching later this year so the rumors point towards Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 lacking a campaign but coming bundled with Modern Warfare 2 Remaster. If this happens, it will be a retread of last year with Black Ops 4 lacking a campaign mode.
Activision will be sharing details about the upcoming Call of Duty game at E3 2019. They have a panel scheduled for the event where Infinity Ward will talk about Call of Duty 2019. Don’t expect to see a full reveal for the next Call of Duty game until then, but Activision might start teasing about the project in the run-up to E3.
