Final Fantasy VII Remake is one of the big PS4 exclusives that launched this year, and it is reportedly getting a PS5 update as well.
As we have been reporting this month, several of the old PS4 games are starting to get an update ahead of the launch of the PS5. This also includes Final Fantasy VII Remake in addition to other first-party exclusives from Sony like The Last of Us Remastered and God of War.

Square Enix’s CEO Yosuke Matsuda had confirmed to investors earlier this year that they have plans to further expand the sales of the game. “Capturing new players is key. I will refrain from going into the details, but we have plans for initiatives to capture players throughout the year, so please keep an eye on our progress. I also note that we will not engage in any marketing strategy that relies solely on pricing.”
Now we are hearing reports that Final Fantasy VII Remake will indeed get a next-generation update for the PS5. The exact nature of this update is not known as of yet, but 4K and 60 FPS remain a target, with the former likely being easy to achieve than the latter. For a refresher on the PS4’s resolution, the game was running at dynamic resolution peaking at 1620p on the PS4 Pro and 1080p on the base PS4, as per an analysis by Digital Foundry. The world and art style of Final Fantasy VII Remake is also ripe for a ray-tracing update, but we are not sure if this one is planned for the PS5.

One of the leakers, Navtra, who has previously reported on Final Fantasy XVI reveal has posted a comment on the resetERA forums talking about a PS5 update being released soon. This was before the version 1.01 patch that launched for PS4. It merely mentioned bug fixes in the changelog, but apparently, it added some degree of support for PS5 as well.
Getting more sales out of the game is one of the key goals for Square Enix, as outlined by Matsuda. Knowing this, don’t be surprised to see a proper next-generation update for Final Fantasy VII Remake being marketed for the PS5. It can be something as simple as the 60 FPS patch for Ghost of Tsushima or go the next step by adding a visual feature like ray-tracing seen with The Witcher 3’s next-generation update by CD Projekt Red. We don’t have to wait that long to find out about it.
