The Death Stranding franchise has reached 28 million players worldwide, marking another milestone for Hideo Kojima’s sci-fi action-adventure series. The achievement follows the release of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and the continued availability of the original game across PlayStation, PC, Xbox, and mobile platforms.
Created by Hideo Kojima and developed by Kojima Productions, Death Stranding introduced what the studio calls the “Social Strand” genre. The game combines open-world exploration and delivery mechanics with indirect multiplayer features, allowing players to contribute to shared infrastructure while reconnecting isolated settlements across a fractured version of America.
The franchise expanded with enhanced versions of the original game, bringing its gameplay experience to additional platforms and audiences. Its availability through multiple digital storefronts and subscription services has also helped the series reach more players.
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach launched on PlayStation 5 in June 2025, followed by a PC release in March 2026. The sequel builds on the original game’s traversal mechanics while introducing additional combat options and expanding the story into new territories.
The Death Stranding 28 million players milestone represents the franchise’s combined player reach rather than confirmed unit sales. The series had previously crossed 27 million players worldwide.
Kojima Productions, which Hideo Kojima established as an independent studio in 2015, is also working on projects beyond Death Stranding. These include OD, a horror game being developed in collaboration with Xbox Game Studios, and Physint, a next-generation action-espionage project.
