A new claim from industry insider Jeff Grubb suggests that Gears of War: E-Day was at one point planned for PlayStation 5 before Microsoft recently decided against bringing the game to Sony’s platform.
Speaking during a podcast appearance, Grubb stated, “I’ll say it here: Gears of War: E-Day was gonna be on PS5, it’s not anymore. That just happened, that’s a decision that just got made.”
According to Grubb, the reported change reflects a broader shift in Microsoft’s thinking around platform strategy. He added, “They’re going backwards on this stuff, where it’s like, ‘this battle doesn’t make any sense,’ and now they’re like ‘exclusives to what, sell another 20 million Xboxes?'”
The claim comes amid ongoing speculation regarding the future of Xbox exclusives and whether more first-party titles could eventually make their way to competing platforms.
Adding to the discussion, placeholder product listings for Gears of War: E-Day have reportedly appeared on Walmart’s website for both Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5. Placeholder listings are not uncommon in retail systems and do not necessarily indicate confirmed platforms, but their existence has fueled further speculation about the game’s release plans.
At present, Gears of War: E-Day has only been officially announced for PC and Xbox Series X/S. Neither Xbox Game Studios nor developer The Coalition has revealed any plans for a PlayStation 5 version.
Gears of War: E-Day serves as a prequel to the long-running shooter franchise. Set fourteen years before the events of the original Gears of War, the game follows younger versions of Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago during the emergence of the Locust Horde on Sera. The title is being developed by The Coalition in partnership with People Can Fly and is currently targeting a 2026 release window.
Until Microsoft provides official clarification, Grubb’s comments and the retailer listings should be treated as unconfirmed reports rather than confirmation that a PlayStation 5 version was ever in development.
